Filmmaker, Videographer & Photographer
Joe Barbarisi has worked with Cyndi Lauper since 2016, when he filmed the Super 8 millimeter cinematography for the "Funnel of Love" music video for her Detour album.
"I had just finished directing the film FLOWERS FOR THE DEAD, and attending the film festivals when my sister Lisa Barbaris (Lauper's longtime manager) recommended me for the 'Funnel of Love' gig, I got the job and we shot the video in Pioneertown, California."

"I worked with Lori E. Seid, who shot cinematography in both high definition and with Cyndi's 16 millimeter camera," said Barbarisi.
"Cyndi likes to incorporate Super 8 or Regular 8 millimeter film to give a vintage look to her videos, so an Old West location like Pappy & Harriet's Pioneertown Palace was a perfect setting to film her onstage performance."

“I feel like I earned my spot with the Lauper group and always gave 100% in whatever it was I was asked to do, video or stage work, but Lisa is the one who lead the way," said Barbarisi.

TOURING WITH CYNDI AND SIR ROD STEWART
"I became assistant to Raymie Kopels (Production Manager / Stage Manager). I’d handle some of the special effects with the stage turntable, backdrop and Kabuki (Japanese theatre), in addition to being the tour videographer," said Barbarisi.

"It was great to have my own camera crew for this video," said Barbarisi. "I took all my leads from Cyndi - I just did what she asked at rehearsals and before the show."
"The key to this video, for me, is the news footage and film reels of The Stonewall Inn from 1969 from Michael Lee. It was a good opener, and gave the piece some texture."
Barbarisi also did the post production editing.
BARBARISI'S FILM MAKING INSPIRATION
"It was John Carpenter's HALLOWEEN in 1978 that caught my attention," said Barbarisi. "I had a Super 8 camera since the mid-1970s, but never thought about making my own movies until I saw that film. I was there with my sister Lisa and about 10 of her Waldwick High School buddies."

"HALLOWEEN changed the way I looked at movies. John Carpenter made me want to be a filmmaker."
Barbarisi also credits directors George A. Romero, Oliver Stone, Brian De Palma, Walter Hill and John Hughes as inspirations.
"Christmas of 1980, I got a Honeywell Super 8 movie camera and three rolls of Tri-X Reversal film. We filmed THE UNION CEMETARY with one of the rolls."

FLOWERS FOR THE DEAD
FLOWERS FOR THE DEAD is a Super 8 film released by Barbarisi in 2013 as a tribute to the 1968 movie NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD and its director George A. Romero. Barbarisi filmed scenes in the same cemetery as NOTLD in Evans City, Philadelphia.
Barbarisi's film was selected as the Audience Choice Short winner during the Macabre Faire Film Festival at the ParaFest 2013 convention in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

He digitalized and remastered Lauper's original video archives including 3/4" studio videotapes, Betamax, PAL and VHS master tapes.
