It was amazingly easy to fall down the rabbit-hole doing research for this feature. For every answer I discovered about Jody Morlock, two questions would pop up. She is what some may refer to as a true renaissance woman.

''Go Play is my daily mantra."

- Jody Morlock

In addition to being a prolific renowned underground NYC designer and abstract mixed-media artist, Morlock was the lead makeup artist on Jon Stewart's The Daily Show on Comedy Central for 21 years (and worked on late night's The Jon Stewart Show prior).

Working alongside clothing stylist Laura Wills of New York's vintage clothing store Screaming Mimi's, Morlock helped Lauper put her best face forward for the albums and tours for A Night to Remember (1989), Hat Full of Stars (1993), and Twelve Deadly Cyns (1994). She also did makeup on the 1988 fan favorite film Vibes with Lauper.

"I met Cyndi through Laura for the Interview Magazine shoot. As you know Patrick (Lucas) did the True Colors LP, but after that I did everything for about eight years including tours, press, and videos."

"I think at the time she was looking to change her style of makeup. That’s where I came in. I loved colors, but with a 40s glam twist. That being said, the work she did with Patrick was truly artistic and so unusual and authentic and amazing. The cover of the True Colors album is just stunning."

"Art has always been my passion and being able to work with Cyndi was always challenging and a creative collaboration. Traveling around the world with her was such an incredible experience and I'm so forever grateful for the memories we shared that I feel we are such kindred spirits."

"I know I say I’m a designer, but that mostly refers to tables and art design projects. Not that I’m a clothing designer."

"I met Patricia Field in 1980. I was the first 20-something to work in her store. There’s a lot of stories here, but I’ll keep it simple. We did fashion shows and she sold some of my crazy jewelry and belts I made at the time. We’ve known each other that long and so here I am full circle painting clothes for ArtFashion. In the words of Rick James, 'Ain’t that a bitch?'"

The sheer amount of art produced by Morlock is astounding and could fill several galleries over: standard size paintings, large grid paintings, relief drawings and canvas, the Pangea Mural, works on paper and canvas, sculpture, monochrome works on paper/canvas board, monochrome paintings, pillows, florals, hand-painted fashion, chalkboard drawings, psychic, ancestrals, interior projects (Bergdorf Goodman, etc), commissioned projects, portraits, works on paper, and tables.

"(My paintings) are my children, they are my soul, they are my urban hieroglyphics."
-Jody Morlock

Some of Morlock's commonly used elements are oil, acrylic, ink, paper, canvas, leather, crystals, plastic, metal, feathers and bone. She's also done birchwood furniture, a totem and the human body.

"I have hungry eyes, and when they are not busy devouring the colored world before me, my brain is busy cutting, rearranging, shaping, structuring, fusing, painting, drawing, dreaming, and grouping, the beauty and chaos in this complicated world."
